'Cause Summer’s Here and the Time is Right for Writing in the Streets, Boy

And along with it, writing season. I think I’ll be using the blog to dump thoughts about shows as I watch them for the chapter I’ll be working on. Just brief hits in the morning a few days per week.

Historically, I have been a slow writer. I work quickly when I know what it is I’m writing, and I’m about there with the whole book, so I’m hoping this happens somewhat quickly and I can make serious progress. It usually takes me fully understanding the core of the argument and then building around that.

I used to pump out around 5k words per week, no problem. This held true through the second year of my MA program. The evidence is all over the web. I worked for a brief stint as a film writer for California Literary Review, and held my own blogs for long periods of time between finishing my undergraduate degree and beginning my grad student career. The most prominent and longest-lasting of these was The Split Screen, which I ran with my buddy Eric Plaag. I had huge chunks of academic work develop in that time period as well. Once Eli Roth tweeted out a piece I wrote about Hostel Part II and it got me a huge audience. I was once cited in the Wikipedia entry for The New French Extremity, until more people started writing about it and a little blogger’s work wasn’t significant enough to back up the claims in the entry any longer, I suppose. I really squandered an opportunity to publish a lot on a topic no one cared about at the time.

In the spirit of that period of productivity, I’ll be setting a schedule and sticking to it. I’m hoping the blog will keep me on top of it. See y’all when I get going in a couple of weeks.
